Welcome to the Engine Rebuild
Parts Wizard! Designed by Wayne R. Dempsey (author of How to Rebuild and Modify
Porsche 911 Engines), this wizard will guide you through the difficult process of
choosing which parts that you need for your rebuild. We'll start the process by
asking you a variety of questions about the engine that you are rebuilding. Okay,
let's begin!
The first step in any rebuild process is to
make sure that you have the proper documentation for the rebuild. We recommend the
following:
How to Rebuild & Modify Porsche 911 Engines In development for more than two years, Wayne's latest book
details the trials of rebuilding the 911 engine. Geared towards the novice
rebuilder, this book takes aim at the notion that you need a PhD degree from the Porsche
factory in order to rebuild a 911 engine. This book aims to unlock never before
published secrets only known in the 'inner circle' of Porsche engine rebuilders.
Having your engine rebuilt by someone else? This book will
arm you with all the information that you need to ask your mechanic before you hire him to
rebuild your precious 911 engine. With this book in hand, you can easily pick out
the experts from the pretenders - and save yourself thousands of dollars by securing
yourself a quality engine rebuild.
The book is 224 pages long, and will contain all the information
that you need to complete the rebuild yourself. In addition, there is a lengthy
chapter on performance upgrades, ranging from the relatively easy task of regrinding your
camshafts, all the way up to the installation of a computer-controlled engine management
system.
101 Projects for Your Porsche 911
A best-seller in Porsche
circles, author Wayne R. Dempsey gives us yet another reason to own a Porsche 911.
'101 Projects' features weekend projects that you can easily perform on your 911 in
your own garage. Ranging from difficult (overview of 911 Engine Rebuilding) to the
very simple (washing your car), this book appeals to both the new and experienced 911
owner alike. The book covers the 1965-89 911 and 911 Turbo, the 912, and is also
useful for 964 (1990-94) owners as well.
Each project is detailed with an easy-to-read chart showing
you exactly how long it should take, what tools you need, applicable years, and the amount
of 'wrenching talent' required. The book contains several chapters of project
overviews, but mostly all of the projects are shown with step-by-step instructions.
The book is 240 pages long, and contains more than 350 Full-Color
pictures and diagrams. Here is a sample page from the shock replacement
project. Here is another page on upgrading to the 911
Turbo Look. For those with carburetors, there's an entire project on the rebuild
process. Showing the range and breadth of projects, there is also a project on the dash pad
installation. For those with older 901 transmissions, there is a project on rebuilding first gear
on your transmission. And finally, for the really adventurous, you can try your hand at timing your
cams!

Bentley 911 Service
Manuals The Porsche 911SC or the 911
Carrera Service manual by Bentley Publishing is an excellent service manual is in the
format of a workshop manual, with many pictures and procedures. The most comprehensive
book out there right now ! It contains a comprehensive index, all the electrical diagrams,
original exploded view diagrams. The manual is about two inches thick, and covers just
about everything that is in the factory manuals. A Perfect replacement for the factory
workshop manual at a much lower price!
These Bentley manuals cover the engine rebuild process in detail,
in a format that closely follows the factory workshop manuals. They are not
presented in a typical how-to format, but instead in a reference-book style, like the
original factory manuals. Bentley 911 Service Manuals are available specific to the
911SC (1978-83) and the 911 Carrera (1984-89), however, the 911SC manual is also extremely
appicable to the pre-1978 cars as well. 911SC

Okay, now that you have the
knowledge base that you need to rebuild your engine, let's move onto the parts that you
need for the bottom end of your engine. The assembly of the engine case internals is
not too tough, and is quite straightforward. All you need is the right tools, the
right knowledge, and the right parts, which we will pick out for you here. Okay,
let's begin:
Engine Case The first question that you need to answer is what year and size is your engine
case. This will help us figure out what bearings and other parts that you need for
your engine rebuild. Please select the engine case from the following menu:
It is important to note here that in 1975,
Porsche changed the location of the bearing tangs in the engine case. As a result,
you need to check your bearings before you order your bearings. If the bearing tangs
are on the right (as shown in this photo),
then you have an early case. If the bearing tangs are on the opposite side, then you
have a later style case. This confusion only applies to 1975 engine cases.
Engine Main Bearings
Main bearings are avaiable in two
different sizes, depending upon whether or not your crankshaft has been reground and
reconditioned. Main bearings are available in three sizes: Standard, for crankshafts
reground 0.25mm undersize, and for crankshafts reground 0.50mm undersize. Please
select the main bearings that you require from the following menu:
Number Eight Nose
Bearing The number eight nose
bearing supports the front-end of the crankshaft. This bearing typically is
well-lubricated, and receives only minimal wear. However, if you really want
assurance that you're rebuild is going to be top-notch, then you should replace this
bearing along with the main bearings. Excessively dirty oil can add to wear around
the center journal of the bearing. The nose bearing is available as well as an
undersized option, although it is unusual to find a crankshaft that has been reground at
the nose. Select the nose bearing you wish to use:
