Intermediate Shaft Bearing (IMS) Retrofit Kits

WARNING: Your Intermediate Shaft Bearing (IMS) could be failing! There are not many warning signs of an impending IMS failure short of a "death rattle" that occurs as the bearing fails and comes apart. If caught early enough, a leak at the IMS hub flange may be signs of a failing bearing, but can be improperly identified as a rear main seal (RMS) leak at times. If doing a RMS, it's recommended to do an IMS retrofit at the same time, as the majority of the labor is identical to that of performing the RMS service.

To see examples of some failed IMS Bearings, click here to watch a short video.

LN Engineering's single and dual row IMS Retrofit Kits are designed to replace the original bearings with like sizes and with similar load ratings, without engine disassembly. Their kits replace the factory sealed bearing with a new, severe duty custom ceramic hybrid roller ball bearing for reduced friction and superior performance in poorly lubricated operating conditions and replaces the factory IMS flange hub, bearing support, and fastener with a stronger, revised billet chromoly assembly. Kits also include new micro encapsulated cover bolts.

Single or Dual Row? Typically, 99% of models from 1997-99 have dual row, and 99% of models from 2002-05 have single row - figures are estimated. Models from 2000 and 2001 are the most unpredictable, and require inspection to determine the bearing type. For complete information about IMS Bearing identification and failure, read our Technical Article and also visit LN Engineering's IMS page.

NOTE: Use of the appropriate IMS Bearing Puller (sold separately) is highly recommended for proper extraction of the IMS Bearing without any damage to the engine or intermediate shaft.

Pelican Parts Intermediate Shaft Bearing (IMS) Update Kit
The Pelican Parts Intermediate Shaft Bearing Replacement Kit is a less-expensive solution to the excellent LN Engineering kit. The Pelican kit replaces the factory bearing with a very similarly manufactured non-ceramic bearing (and with an improved seal and updated center bolt). This one kit will work with either the single or dual row IMS on your M96 engine (1997-04) or your very early 2005 engine that doesn't utilize the newer oversize bearings. We recommend that the bearing be replaced each time a clutch replacement is performed (every 40,000 miles or so).

The Pelican Parts Intermediate Shaft Bearing Replacement Kit includes:
• Improved center bearing bolt
• Outer race spacer (for engine with double-row bearings)
• Inner race spacer (for engine with double-row bearings)
• Replacement intermediate shaft bearing
• Center bolt O-ring
• Center bolt nut
• Long center bolt spacer (for engine with single-row bearings)
• Short center bolt spacer (for engine with double-row bearings)
• Snap ring (for engine with single-row bearings)
• Spiroloc snap ring (for engine with double-row bearings)
• 3 new micro-encapsulated cover bolts
• 3 M6x25mm installation helper bolts
• 3 M6x1x25mm set screws
• Updated 3-groove flange seal
• O-ring for older style flange seal

The Pelican kit also uses the stock intermediate shaft bearing cover as a way to reduce the total cost of the kit. To read more about the Intermediate Shaft Bearing (IMS) Replacement, click here to read the entire article on Project 14 from 101 Projects for Your Porsche Boxster.

If your intermediate shaft bearing cover has a single-row gasket, Pelican recommends that you replace it with the upgraded multi-row gasket intermediate bearing shaft cover 996-105-017-02-M100.

Curil-T Sealant
Curil-T is a good, thin sealant that I use as an extra precaution against oil leaks when installing some seals. You will want to spread it around on a few of the seals and gaskets during the rebuild process.
